During the Christmas festive season, many religious customs take center stage. One of these is the tradition of preparing the Christopsomo<\/em> (Christ\u2019s bread). Specifically, this tradition dates back many years to Thrace, where, according to custom, housewives would bake this special bread on Christmas Eve.<\/p>\r\n

\u00a0After kneading the dough, they would make sure to carve a cross in the center and add raisins and walnuts. In most cases, the bread is round, with ingredients similar to ordinary bread, while the decorations that accompany it are symbolic of the faithful\u2019s devotion.<\/p>\r\n

Traditionally, on Christmas Day, families would gather around the festive table, and along with exchanging wishes, the head of the household would bless the Christopsomo<\/em>, cut the first piece for Christ, and share the rest among the family.<\/p>\r\n

This custom is deeply rooted in many regions of Greece, though each has its own variations. For example, in Sparta, the Christopsomo<\/em> was made along with many other loaves of bread containing almonds and walnuts. The final loaf, eaten on Christmas Day, was shaped like a cross from the dough.<\/p>\r\n

In parts of Central Greece, after the Christmas service, the priest would bless the Christopsomo<\/em> individually in each home.<\/p>\r\n

In Western Macedonia, small loaves were kneaded for the children who sang carols, and other ring-shaped loaves were made for the household animals as a sign of respect.<\/p>\r\n

In Crete, women use special ingredients such as rosewater, cinnamon, cloves, and honey. While kneading, they would recite the phrase: \u201cChrist is born, the light rises, the yeast to rise.\u201d Half of the dough was made into a round loaf, while the rest was shaped into a cross with strips placed on top of the bread. A walnut was placed in the center, and various patterns were carved on the surface.<\/p>\r\n

In the Ionian Islands, on Christmas Eve, the whole family would gather at the home of the eldest, and the head of the household would place the Christopsomo<\/em> near the fire, pouring oil or wine over it. If the bread grew, it was considered a good omen; if it collapsed, a bad one.<\/p>\r\n

In Mani, the Christopsomo<\/em> is made like regular bread but decorated with crosses and other ornaments. There, the expression goes that each family \u201cputs the Christopsomo in the oven,\u201d to be cut later by the host at the table with blessings.<\/p>\r\n

In Epirus, the Sarakatsani would bake two Christopsomo<\/em>: the more ornate one, decorated for Christ, and a second one to honor their sheep.<\/p>\r\n

Thus, it is a deeply traditional custom that varies by region but maintains a common thread: the Greek people\u2019s relationship with bread and the art of baking.<\/p>\r\n
